Who We Are

The Smarter Service enables active aging residential communities (aged 55+) and independent / assisted living to meet the technology needs of their residents by providing onsite and virtual technology training and support to older adults for technology they have, or need to adopt within their communities. We provide a personalized, human-centered service that provides 1:1, small group and community-wide interactive events, and easy “How to Guides” which enable older adults to extend their sense of independence in an increasingly digital world that is forcing technology adoption and usage at a rapid rate (from eCommerce to banking, healthcare, and social media). With our patient team of Tech Concierges, The Smarter Service provides ongoing technology training and support services that help older adults navigate technology confidently, improve the quality of their lives, and helps them adapt and utilize technology to stay connected to friends, family and those who care for them.

About the Role

We are seeking a Business Development Manager with a strong network in active aging and retirement communities. Your main goal will be to identify key decision-makers, build a robust pipeline, and sell our innovative tech support services. This role requires the ability to influence through compelling storytelling and effectively communicate our vision. If you are passionate about innovation, driven to challenge the status quo, and skilled at identifying prospects and closing deals, this could be the perfect position for you. This role is remote and can be located anywhere in the US.

Duties & Responsibilities

As a Business Development Manager, you will engage key decision-makers in active aging & retirement communities, build a sales pipeline, and share our tech support services through compelling storytelling to close deals.

  • Develop a targeted lead list aimed at setting up 100 community meetings, with an expected close rate of 10% per quarter.
  • Identify, attend and participate in relevant tradeshows to expand our network and build out relationships with potential clients.
  • Conduct presentations both in-person and virtually to potential clients, persuasively educating them on the value of using The Smarter Service’s solution. 
  • Based on individual community needs, create innovative solutions that align The Smarter Service with community requirements, closing deals to work on the property. 
  • Leverage various tools including LinkedIn, Zoho, etc. to manage the business development process.
  • Provide sales activity reports with documented lead status and next steps.
  • Offer product-market fit feedback to marketing and leadership for service refinement.
  • Build a set of tangible and quantifiable metrics/KPIs to demonstrate The Smarter Service’s value, helping to close sales.
  • Conduct market research to stay current on industry trends and tailor approaches to remain competitive.

Skills & Requirements

  • Proven experience and success in business development selling service solutions in these environments.
  • Strong leadership skills, comfortable leading internal sales calls to share progress, learnings and forward-looking plans.
  • Established network within the Independent & retirement communities preferred.
  • Ability to self-manage and work independently and take initiative, demonstrating a self-starter attitude and go-getter mentality.
  • You have the ability to create sales decks and materials as you learn what your prospects need.
  • Works well within a team to collaborate on marketplace learnings, with the ability to apply learnings and adjust sales strategies.
  • Positive energy and enthusiasm to motivate and inspire decision-makers to evolve how they think about supporting Older Adults & technology.
  • Resourcefulness to find, explore and utilize various resources, tools and techniques to tell a compelling story about The Smarter Service. 
  • Entrepreneurial mindset, constantly seeking opportunities to improve and expand the service while staying attuned to the needs and realities for communities. 
  • Through discussions, identifies problems or concerns for communities and leverages this insight to make our solution and storytelling better. 
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced startup, carving new paths & innovation in an established space.
  • Takes action through strong initiative and self-direction.
  • Builds and maintains positive relationships that lead to business deals and/or connections.
  • Familiar with technology & a passion for innovation, especially for older adults.

  • Employment Type: Full-Time
  • Compensation Range: $90,000 – $125,000 + Commission
