Shining a Spotlight on Digital Confidence: Abbie Richie on MK Radio Network

When technology moves fast, it can feel overwhelming — especially for older adults who may not have grown up in the digital world. But with the right support, technology can become more than just a tool; it can become a bridge to family, wellness, safety, and connection.

That’s the message Abbie Richie, Tech Guru at The Smarter Service, shared during her recent interview on Spotlight with host George Zahn on the Maple Knoll Radio Network. Reaching more than 33,000 listeners nationwide across BHI Senior Living communities and beyond, the program gave Abbie the chance to highlight both practical tech tips and the deeper importance of patient, human-centered support.

From Family Need to a Nationwide Mission

Abbie’s journey began in 2017, when she started helping her in-laws and neighbors with everyday tech frustrations like printers, Wi-Fi, and phones. What began as simple support quickly revealed a much bigger need: older adults across the country were eager for patient, judgment-free help with technology.

“I grew up with my nana and papa and I have a deep love and admiration for what I consider the best generation,” Abbie shared. “Helping them feel comfortable with technology just felt natural.”

That passion grew into a successful venture that, in 2024, became part of The Smarter Service. Today, Abbie uses her skills and experience to advance the company’s mission on a national scale — empowering older adults, caregivers, and senior living communities with accessible, confidence-building tech support.

Tech Tips That Build Confidence

During the interview, Abbie highlighted some of the practical ways older adults can use technology to stay safe and well:

  • Scam awareness: From the “grandparent scam” to fake vacation rentals, scammers prey on urgency and trust. Abbie stressed slowing down and verifying before acting.

  • Software updates = security: Updates may feel inconvenient, but they contain vital patches that protect devices from hacking.

  • Signs it’s time for a new device: Frequent crashes, poor battery life, or the inability to install updates are red flags.

  • Wellness apps that work: From Silver Sneakers for fitness, to hydration reminders, to nutrition trackers — technology can help people live healthier every day.

Abbie also emphasized the emotional impact of video calls, sharing stories of helping residents attend their granddaughter’s wedding via Zoom or reconnect with old friends in online book clubs. “There’s something so personal about seeing someone face to face,” she noted. “It transforms a phone into a lifeline.”

The Human Side of Tech

A recurring theme in Abbie’s message is that teaching technology is about patience and empowerment. Too often, family members try to “fix” problems by grabbing the device and doing it themselves.

“We never want to do the ‘Titanic takeaway,’” Abbie explained. “Instead, we slow down, explain, and meet people at their pace — so they build the confidence to use their devices independently.”

This philosophy not only supports residents but also relieves staff and family caregivers, who no longer have to be the default tech support.

Why It Matters

Technology can be intimidating — but it can also be transformative. By focusing on trust, confidence, and comfort, The Smarter Service helps older adults do more than use their devices; it helps them connect to what matters most: family, friends, health, and community.

As Abbie put it:

“Our work at The Smarter Service goes way beyond fixing devices. It’s about building trust, explaining technology, and opening doors to new uses.”
